Sahana Shravan
For violinist Sahana Shravan, chamber music and teaching give meaning to a life in music. From Palm Beach County, Florida to her home in New York City today, her career has evolved into an exploration of how art can serve and create open, compassionate, and accepting communities of artists and audiences.
Though her introduction to teaching was as her first Suzuki teacher’s studio assistant, Sahana received most of her training through the Office of Community Engagement at Juilliard, where she was a Teaching Fellow in Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program as well as in string and introductory music programs across New York City public schools. She also creates lesson plans and teaches music appreciation workshops for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the NYC-based nonprofit Concerts for Compassion. Her pursuit of artistic citizenship has led to accolades such as the Benzaquen Career Advancement Grant, the first inaugural Joan D.Warren Prize for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement, and the Joseph W. Polisi Prize for Artist as Citizen. In 2025, she was recognized as a Van Lier Fellowship Artist of Exceptional Merit by the Asian American Arts Foundation.
Her chamber music mentors include Natasha Brofsky, Laurie Smukler, Orli Shaham, members of the Brentano Quartet, Emile Naumoff, and Roger Tapping. She has been a member of Fellowship String Quartets at the European American Musical Alliance, Colorado Music Festival, Steamboat Strings Music Festival, St. Lawrence String Quartet Seminar, and Madeline Island Chamber Music. She has performed and taught as a guest with the Callisto String Quartet, and played at Alice Tully Hall, Tenri Cultural Institute of New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, David Rubenstein Atrium, and Livermore Valley Arts. In 2022, she was awarded Gold Prize at the St. Paul String Quartet Competition as a member of the Marian String Quartet.
In addition to performing and teaching, Sahana has extensive experience with concert curation and production spanning multiple artistic practices and genres. She has collaborated with artists such as Reena Esmail, California–based Leela Dance Collective, and Kalaimamani Sikkil Gurucharan, and has spearheaded an annual series of Earth Day concerts featuring dance, drama, and music for the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center.
Sahana received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Areta Zhulla and Catherine Cho and was the recipient of a Kovner Fellowship for her graduate studies. She has served on faculty at Rocky Ridge Music’s Junior Artist Intensive, BRAVO Workshop Buffalo, and Hudson Montessori Conservatory Chamber Music Intensive.
Apart from classical violin, Sahana enjoys reading, exploring other genres of music, the outdoors in any form, and puzzling over that day’s New York Times games.
